The Cha Cha Slide

Forewarning: This post is not about dance moves. If you're easily grossed out or you don't think poop is funny (Josh), you might want to skip this one.

Our day yesterday began and ended with an explosion...in Isaac's diaper.

Zach woke me with the usual, "Honey, he's awake. Do you want me to get him?" He brought Isaac to me in bed to nurse, but when I reached out for my darling boy, I felt wet stickiness up his back and a putrid smell wafted to my nose. "Oh, Zach, he's all poopy."

Much to Isaac's hungry dismay, Zach took him away from Momma, aka Lady with Boobs, to the changing table. Over Spike's sad shrieks, I heard, "Oh, geez. Honey, can you come help me?"

We stripped the boy down, finding more poop in the onesie than in his diaper, and took him straight to the tub. What a way to wake up.

Fast forward to dinner time. Izey was being a very fussy eater, and it was Daddy's duty to feed him while I made dinner for the grown ups. I kept hearing comments like, "Oh, Izey, don't smear it all over the table! You're supposed to eat it. It's good!"

After getting Spike to tolerate a critical mass of food, Zach was picking up the remainder from the floor underneath. "What's this mustardy looking stuff?" he wondered. Then--oh yes--he stuck his finger in it and smelled it. From the kitchen, I heard, "You have GOT to be kidding me!" There was poop running down Isaac's leg and dripping onto the floor.

We put him into the empty bathtub, stripped him down, again finding more poop in his pant leg than in his diaper, and then filled up the tub for bath #2 of the day. This was great fun to Izey.

Mom and Dad had to bathe a baby twice, strip the sheets and blankets from the bed, change the pad on the changing table, mop the floor and high chair, rinse poop (with whole peas in it, by the way) from two outfits, do lots-o-laundry, and then sanitize the sink and tub. Fun. Fun. Fun.

At first we thought Spike was just (literally) too big for his britches, so we bumped him to the next size diapers--size 5 for those who understand how huge that is!--but apparently that was not the reason for the leakage.

This morning I nursed Izey in bed as usual and he acted like all he really wanted to do was go back to sleep. Having learned my lesson yesterday, I thought, "I better change his diaper first!" And the boy actually fell asleep while I was changing his diaper! I put him back in his crib and he slept for another hour.

When he woke up the second time, he was totally lethargic--instead of trying to climb all over me and grab things off my night stand, he just sat on my lap staring out the window. He's already had one diaper overflow and the only reason the second one didn't was because I changed it almost before he was done.

After a tiny breakfast, I actually turned on the TV and Izey sat quietly on my lap and watched Dragon Tales and Sesame Street. We have never watched TV before, and I can't remember the last time he was so still for so long. That actually is one nice thing about having a sick boy, he's very cuddly.

  1. I fully expect to get "that's nothing, our baby pooped 53 times in one hour..." comments on this post. I know Izey's case of the cha cha's could have been much worse. and I feel for ya, Megs. :)

  7. Sofia was kinda like that a week ago. She was so "poopy" and we change 20 diapers with 10 of them being "soupy poopy" in 24 hrs. Luckily for us and Sofia, she was really good at keeping hydrated. It is funny how kids can be so happy when they are so sick and don't know any better. Ignorance is bliss...
