The Perfect Place

Can you guess where I am?

When Isaac was fresh (Zach's word for newborn), I read a funny article on babycenter.com (a really good resource for pregnant or new moms) about "horrible mommy moments." They ranged from packing up the car but forgetting the baby to accidentally stepping on him/her. There was one story about a mom getting home to a very inventive daddy--they had run out of diapers so he taped a maxi pad to the baby!

While I know I'm not perfect, I generally go through life with rosy colored glasses on and my momela often reminds me to be flexible and not hold myself to unrealistic expectations. When I read that story, I remember thinking, it's pretty ridiculous to run out of diapers. It's not like it's hard to have mass quantities stocked up. So of course, because I thought that, we ran out of diapers yesterday.

In my defense, Zach was the one to use the last one. That is pretty funny if you know Zach. He's the one who had us shopping at Sam's club when we first got married because his motto was "We'll use it eventually!" He's also pretty obsessive about having two of everything: one bottle of shampoo in the shower, one in the closet. When you get the one out of the closet, the rule is that you put it on the grocery list. It really ruffles his feathers when we run out of stuff.

So when I took Isaac's poopy diaper off and the was unable to find a new one, I called to Zach (who was working from home), "Honey! We're out of diapers!" I think he growled.

We have these burp cloths that are a lot like old school cloth diapers, so I actually used safety pins (praying they wouldn't pop open!) to put one of those on Isaac. He totally had plumber buttcrack stickin' out because the "diaper" barely fit around his voluptuous thighs. Zach, grumbling, took off for Target. I thought to myself, "If Isaac poops or even just pees this diaper is going to be completely useless." That's when I saw it, the perfect place for a baby who may pee without a diaper on:
Spike happily played in the laundry basket until daddy came home from the store. And, by the way, he didn't pee at all. Once he had his huggies back, he went right back into the laundry basket. He likes it! He sat in it quite contentedly watching me do my Kathy Smith aerobic video.

  1. HOW CUTE! Wait till he uses 2 baskets and he looks like he is in a cage. My nieces thought that was so funny!

    Love you!

  4. Next time check in the trunk of the car or under the passenger seat. Also, behind the crib. Diapers grow in those places.

  5. My nephew, who is 2, has always loved laundry baskets. He calls them "boats" and will put two next two each other and "row" them (in theory. Meaning, they never really move...). He jumps back and forth between them. The bonus is that he also loves to help my sister sort the laundry. Always nice to have a helper! Maybe Spike's fascination with laundry baskets will translate into helping sort whites vs. colors someday. A girl can dream...

  7. We were at a friends house and ran outn of diapers! We had her bathing suit in the travel bag and we put this on while Meg and Dawn went to the store. I saw "water" on the floor and it took me a while to realize it was not water. Unlike the very wise Kate, I forgot to realize that her baby swimsuit was ment to contain #2's and not so much #1's. Not my brightest fatherhood moment...
