My Bump

I've been wanting to take a picture of my little pregnant belly for awhile, so the other day I tried using my camera timer in my living room. I didn't think that my head would be in the photo, so when I saw this picture, I cracked up. This is apparently what I look like when I think no one can see me.
I went to take another picture, you know, smiling this time, and the battery died. So this is what you get!

For the first half of my Spike pregnancy, everyone thought I looked tiny. Here's a sample of some comments that I got from students and collegues:

"Are you sure you're pregnant?" (If not, someone better explain all the puking I've been doing.)
"You're carrying it all in your butt." (um, thank...you..?)
"Robert said it looks like a knee." (A knee? Robert, you said my belly looks like a knee?) "Well, it do!"

This time around, I'm in a more polite community, so I get more of this:

"You're how many weeks?" (18)
"I look like you and I'm not pregnant!" (um, sorry?)

Have no fear, though, because the whole second half of my first pregnancy was filled with:

"Are you sure you're not having twins?" (Please God, no!)
"Uh, you lookin' all fat and sloppy." (Yeah, that one was a student. We had a chat.)
"You look like you gonna pop." (That's an accurate description of how I feel right now, too.)

My favorite was when I was leaving school one day and a kid that I didn't know said something about me looking like I was going to pop. Then a big POP sound rang out from the gym and he whipped around and looked at me and said, "I thought that was you!!"

The best compliment that I got while pregnant was from my beloved friend Jake, who always told me I was "movie pregnant"--thin but with a big belly, like a movie star. I certainly didn't feel that way, but his little comment sealed our friendship.

So while I may just have a little "knee" now, I'm almost 19 weeks along and I'm sure soon I'll look ready to pop. Just please, don't tell me that.

  4. Hey Kate! I just got home from a maternity session and read your blog! When are you due again? February? I would totally come home and take your maternity photos if you'd like! We could do some cute ones outside in the snow (and also inside).
