stuff

I have so much and so little to write about...

I'm reading a great book, hence the lack of posting with any regularity lately.

We happened to discover a Chicago Park District pool near us that does a FREE open swim for parents and toddlers every Saturday morning. We went this past Saturday and Isaac had a blast. We hope to make it a weekly ritual. I would post pictures that my parents took, but most of them are blurry, and in those that aren't, I'm really pregnant and in a bathing suit. Not for public consumption.

Speaking of FREE, did you know that the Museum of Science and Industry is free this whole month? And if you're a relatively new parent, you probably don't know that they have a fantastic kids' area that rivals Chicago Children's Museum! We'll see ya there.

I starting babysitting my godbaby, Eva Verhage once a week. Monday was our first day and it was super fun. She is 9 1/2 months old and has a funny ghetto-limp crawl. She and Izey love each other--her love for Izey is evident in the way she intently watches him and quickly crawls after him when he goes away; Izey's love is evident in the way he tries to "wrestle" with her, kiss her, and hug her. A large part of my day was spent refereeing my son, but taking care of her was actually easier than I thought, mostly because she's still a baby and is not yet to the toddler tantrum phase. The really crazy part is that Liz (Eva's momma) and I realized that technically speaking, Isaac, Eva, and Thor could be siblings. Isaac is 10 months older than Eva and Eva will be 11 months older than Thor! Plus they look alike. YIKES!

I got an email from my advisor at Northwestern (where I'm going to grad school...during quarters when I am not having babies) that they are putting out a book of graduates' resumes. I put my resume in a similar book back in 2006 even though I was still working at Harper, just to see what would happen. I got calls all the time for interviews. This time I will actually be looking for work--woah--so I polished up my resume again and sent it in yesterday. That was an emotional experience. When I first started, I was totally overwhelmed by how old the info about me was, I felt like I had been out of the game for way too long and really doubted whether I could do it anymore. By the time Zach sat down with me and helped me think through it and finish it, I felt like, "Anyone would be lucky to have me!" (In case you're wondering [or hiring] my ideal situation would be to start working part time in the fall. It'll probably be hard to find a teaching gig that is part time, although they do exist, so I might look for something else in the field of education too. We'll see... Thor will be about 6 months old.)

  1. It's scarey to "polish up" ones resume after having babies. I'm curious if you listed motherhood as one of your occupations. Seriously, I think I do more as a mom and "volunteer" than I did as a Director of Technology! The politics are still there too! Go for it Kate. They'd be lucky to have you!
