Anything for you, babe.

A few months ago, I returned a call to a parent of one of my students. It was loud in the background, and I asked her if it was an okay time. She said, "Oh, yeah, I'm just at my son's school doing cafeteria duty. Ha ha! Something to look forward to in your future!"

My first reaction was, Oh my lord. I really hope I am too busy with more important things so that I am never asked to do cafeteria duty when the boys are in school! *gag*

But you know what? Here I am back to stay-at-home-motherhood and loving it, something I never thought I would enjoy before I had kids. And then I thought more about doing cafeteria duty at Isaac's school in a couple of years and I realized, for Isaac, I would do it. for Anders, I would do it. I would probably even enjoy getting to see my sons in their own setting, sitting with their little friends, interacting with their peers, being embarrassed (or maybe excited? one can hope!) that their mom is at school.

Spending time with toddlers is not something I would choose to do if I were not a mother, but I love being home with my two boys, and I even think I'm good at it sometimes.

When motherhood goes from the theoretical, hypothetical, "some day" to the real, now, actual adorable, funny little people that are my children, it changes everything. I would do anything, anything for these two boys. Trade in my heels for tennies, my literary novels for Curious George, my paycheck for time with them. And yes, I would even do cafeteria duty.

  1. I love hearing all these tales. I am so glad you are content and at peace. It WILL be a short time and you will out influencing those older kids and adults soon. Love, Grammy
