Quiet Day

Today is the first day (including weekends) in more than two weeks that Isaac and I have had no plans-- no babysitting, no playdates, no appointments, no field trips, and no errands to run. Whew. I think I really needed this. I am prioritizing rest first, quality time with Isaac second, and cleaning third (not sure which of those categories blogging falls under...).

Here's what we did today in words, pics, and vids.

First, we had car races. We got out everything with wheels and lined them up, then Isaac sat on the stairs while I pushed them, one at a time, down the hall toward him. The yellow car won five out of eight times. After each race, Isaac said, "Body crashin'" because after one race, I said, "Everybody is crashing." Then he picked them up, one by one, and lined them up by me, telling me which car he was bringing, "Tiny green car...fire truck...trolley...yellow car...race car...." When he was done, he started singing the clean up song and put them all away...without me even asking him to. This kid loves clean up time. It is awesome.

After the races, we colored (mostly butterflies) until Isaac started taking bites out of the crayons.

Then he put all his stuffed animals down for a nap ("Chicken seepin'. Dora seepin'. Ni-night, piggy. Ni-night, baby.") and rudely woke them each up by yelling, "Vake up!" and throwing them on the floor.

Then he read himself books for a long time while I wrote in my journal. He is starting to recite more lines to himself of books that he knows. Today he was saying "Cookie see, Cookie do, Elmo too" which is really very close to the actual line of one of his favorite books. He also has a book that has a picture of an animal eating a plate of peas. He loves that particular picture and was leafing through the book over and over again looking for it saying, "Tiny balls?" Then he'd get really excited when he found it, close the book, and start trying to find it again. After reading books, he emptied his diapers from the changing table again and requested to wear a swimmy diaper as a hat. Not wanting Bear to feel left out, we had to put one on his head as well. Then it was puzzle time. Isaac's learning shapes right now (it helps that Kalea knows them so well!), so the puzzle below is his favorite. However, he would only do it if I was taking a picture of him. What a show-off.

After lunch, Isaac played cooking. He cooked pasta with peanut butter and oranges in it (yum). This kid cooked and cooked (in the meantime I was half asleep on the couch) until it was too messy and then he threw it all over the living room. Then it was clean up time again, followed by books and a nap.

So that's what a nice, quiet morning looks like for Izey boy and his momma. My willingness to set aside any of my own tasks to help, play with, or encourage Isaac is really what has made this day so peaceful so far. If only I were willing and able to do that every day!

Now I'm off to accomplish some of that cleaning...

  1. Who knew swim diapers were so attractive as hats? I have to get me one!

  2. I don't have time to read this whole post, but I have to say that the pic of Isaac and his bear with the swimmies on their heads is PRICELESS. Thanks for the laugh.
